SEPTEMBER NOTES

SEPTEMBER NOTES

September is mostly a negotiation: the calendar says fall but the weather may have other plans. We’ve decided to proceed anyway, with layers in full swing. We’re starting to swap sandals for loafers and let the scarf do more for the outfit than the temperature actually requires. It’s the beginning of getting dressed again, and frankly, we’ve missed having options.

This fall, brown is the it-girl. Chocolate, tobacco, cognac, suede, leather, oh my! Our fall capsule consists of a tightly edited cast of characters that can be rearranged until further notice. Think casual, light sweaters, worn-in boots, and chic mini-skirts (for now!).

The house is getting dressed, too. Summer’s lighter look is making room for bedding with a little more presence. We’re here for the washed linens, quilts, pattern on pattern, texture and the kind of bed that looks best slightly undone. We’re approaching it much like our wardrobe—nothing matching too perfectly, something old next to something new and enough elements to make the whole thing interesting.

September also marks the return of wanting something brewing in the oven, exuding those warm fuzzy feeling smells. Banana bread feels right. It’s uncomplicated, best made with the ones you nearly forgot about and even better the next morning. We’ll take ours warm with salted butter, preferably while wearing a cashmere sweater the weather hasn’t technically called for yet.
