WHY CHOOSE VINTAGE?

FAQ

Common questions about vintage rugs

Can I have a vintage rug if I have pets, children or high traffic areas?

Yes! Vintage rugs are hand-knotted from wool (one of the most durable natural fibers!) and many have already lived decades of daily life. They hold up beautifully in family homes and only grow softer with time. Spills and messes can be gently blotted and cleaned—wool’s natural lanolin makes it surprisingly forgiving. Check out our in depth post about this here.

How do I clean and maintain my vintage rug?

Regular vacuuming with suction only (no bristles) and occasional professional cleaning preserves the natural beauty. Never use a carpet cleaner machine to clean a vintage rug. Blot, not rub, any spills with a clean cloth and mild detergent (avoid harsh chemicals). For long-term care, rotate your rug annually to even out wear and fading. Always roll rugs when stored.

Are vintage rugs stain resistant?

While no textile is entirely stain-proof, wool’s natural oils help resist spills. Most spots lift easily with water and mild soap if tended to quickly. Over time, each rug develops a beautiful patina that embraces small imperfections as part of its story.

How do I choose the right size rug for my space?

Start with your room’s dimensions and how you want furniture to interact with the rug—under the sofa, under the dining table, or as a standalone accent. We’ve created a comprehensive Rug Size Guide that maps out the proportions for every space, from entryways to living rooms, kitchens and beyond.

Can vintage rugs be custom sized?

While each rug is uniquely one-of-a-kind, we’re happy to help source the perfect fit for a dimension requested outside of what’s available online.

What if my rug is slightly irregular in shape?

Many vintage rugs are not perfectly symmetrical—a mark of their handmade origin. These subtle variations add character and authenticity. Once your rug is styled in a room, any slight variations are rarely noticeable.

How can I tell if a rug is truly vintage?

Authentic vintage rugs are hand-knotted rather than machine-made, often with uneven knots on the back. The underside will not have a sewn-on backing, and the fringe is typically the warp threads of the rug itself, not sewn on after. The palette tends to have soft, variegated fading rather than flat uniformity—an effect of natural dyes and years of lived-in use.

Will a vintage rug work in a modern home?

Absolutely! The beauty of vintage rugs is their versatility—whether grounding a more modern space with warmth or adding history to a traditional space, they bring texture, coziness and a sense of collected living.

How long will a vintage rug last?

A vintage rug will last generations longer. Many of the rugs we offer have already been in use for 40–100 years, and they are only halfway through their lifespan. Talk about the inherent sustainability of vintage rugs!

Are all vintage rugs one-of-a-kind?

Yes. Each rug is entirely unique, woven by hand, often with patterns or color stories specific to a region or family tradition. No two are ever alike.

Do vintage rugs need a rug pad?

We recommend a high-quality rug pad under every piece. It prevents slipping, cushions the weave, and protects both your floor and the rug’s foundation. Check out our rug pad recommendation here.
