OCTOBER NOTES

OCTOBER NOTES

October, in all its layered glory. The air has finally acquired a little bite, winter itineraries are being loosely romanticized, and the prospect of a house full of family soon has us reconsidering everything from the guest linens to the seating arrangements. We're entering that wonderful stretch of the year when life moves increasingly indoors, our wardrobes become infinitely more interesting, and the art of making oneself at home takes on a whole new meaning.

There's something deeply satisfying about the return of the need for more clothing layers with colder weather on the horizon. After a summer of bare necessities, autumn arrives with an entire wardrobe of possibilities. A scarf with every practical purpose. A particularly good pair of over-the-knee socks. An oversized coat that changes the entire look of an otherwise simple ensemble. We always love a little character customization and 'tis the season for some experimentation.

Meanwhile, our homes are getting the same treatment. Pattern upon pattern, a curious object perched where it’s least expected, and textiles with enough texture to warrant going back for seconds. The most compelling spaces, much like the most interesting people, rarely concern themselves with being perfectly put together. Major mood this fall.

With the approaching holiday season, we’ve also been contemplating the virtues of hospitality. Daydreaming about the perfect bedside carafe, a stack of freshly laundered towels, or that extra blanket folded at the foot of the bed. These are the almost imperceptible gestures that make a guest feel less like a visitor and more like an extension of your own household. Between plotting our own winter escapes and anticipating familiar faces around our dinner table, we're reminded that home is never quite as alive as when it's being shared. October makes a convincing argument for a slower sort of indulgence. A little more visual input and a few more reasons to linger just a tad longer. We're happily obliging.
